March 27, 20225 Purposes of silicone sealant in construction
Silicone Sealant playing the role of bonding and sealing has been widely used in curtain walls, doors and windows, insulating glass, interior decoration, and other architectural fields.
According to the purpose, sealant can be roughly divided into the following 5 categories: structural silicone sealant, weatherproof silicone sealant, ordinary silicone sealant, secondary silicone sealant for insulating glass, and silicone sealant for special purposes.
- Structural Silicone Sealant
Purpose: mainly used for structural bonding of glass and aluminum subframe, and also for secondary sealing of hollow glass of hidden frame curtain wall.
Features: Bear wind load and gravity load, have high requirements for strength and aging resistance, and have certain requirements for elasticity.
- Weatherproof Silicone Sealant
Purpose: joint sealing to ensure airtightness, water tightness, and other properties.
Features: it needs to bear large changes in joint width, high requirements for elasticity (displacement capacity) and aging resistance, low requirements for strength, high modulus, and low modulus.
- Ordinary silicone sealant
Purpose: sealing of door and window joints, external wall joints, and other positions.
Features: bear the change of joint width, have certain displacement capacity requirements, and low strength requirements.
- Secondary silicone sealant for insulating glass
Purpose: double sealing of insulating glass to ensure the structural stability of the insulating glass.
Features: high modulus, not too soft, some have structural requirements.
- Special purpose silicone sealant
Application: used for joint sealing with special requirements, such as fire prevention, mildew prevention, etc.
Features: it needs to have some special properties (such as mildew prevention, fire prevention, etc.).
Sillicone sealants for different purposes have different performance characteristics. Generally, they cannot be used in place of each other at will. For example, using weatherproof sealant instead of structural sealant and door and window sealant instead of weatherproof sealant may lead to serious quality and safety accidents.
Therefore, the sealant shall be selected correctly according to the characteristics of different uses.
